On the East side of my house is acorn heaven. Hundreds of seedlings sprouted there in April 2008. |
No doubt the squirrels helped create these little trees, by shoving the acorns under the fallen leaves last autumn. |
This oak seedling has roots nourished by many decomposing oak leaves. |
|
This acorn looks like it was munched by an animal. Why didn't the critter eat the whole thing? Did the animal chew on this acorn before or after the tree began around it? |
The seedling on the left began from an acorn that had had a larva inside it, I think. |
I like the rusty color of this acorn. |

OK, this is interesting--see how the acorn's two halves are both part of the seedling. Does one half make the root part? How does this work, I wonder? |
The two halves, without shell |
This baby will find a new home after I take his picture! |

These little guys have a simple beauty. |

This one had nice leaves. The other seedlings had hole-y leaves that had already been munched by someone. |

Although this nut looks edible, don't try it. |
The shell will detach soon enough. |
this acorn also had some (insect?) damage, at bottom |

The acorn part is out of focus, on the right. See new teensy leaves in left of photo. |
