About Kat Mulkey

I answer to Kathy Griffin, Kathryn Lisa Griffin, Kathryn Lisa Griffin Mulkey, Kat Mulkey, Kath, Kat, and (my favorite name) "Mom."
I say "Yes" to:  friendship, hiking, hula-hooping, music (especially from Erica Mulkey aka Unwoman), kite-flying, bicycling, baseball, art, museums, good books, children, gluten-free food, and movies.

  • I grew up in Lake County, CA
  • After high school, I moved to Sacramento to attend Sac State (BA Economics). In 1980 I married Ben Mulkey, and had a beautiful baby girl. In 1984 we moved to Texas where I attended:
  • University of Texas at Dallas (High School Teaching Credential Mathematics and History).
  • I enjoyed Dallas! While taking courses, I also did my student teaching at Richardson Junior High. Later when we moved to Maine, I taught high school mathematics at Scarborough High School. When we moved back to California I taught at Rosary High School, and Orinda Academy. All three institutions were (and still are) superior schools where I am proud to have worked.

  • After an internship at Chronicle Books, some more of my Introduction into the publishing world occurred at AltaMira Press in Walnut Creek CA (1998-2001), founded by Mitch Allen, who later established   Left Coast Press .

  • In the mid-2000s I spent a year at Key Curriculum Press, where I sold mathematics books like Key To Algebra and EMPower Mathematics to institutions such as Folsom State Prison and the Clark County (NV)School District.

  • My life in publishing occurred for the most part at Publishers Group West (2001 to 2007) in Berkeley, CA where until early 2007, I worked in the Special Markets Department. We sold books into fun retail places like Anthropologie , Z Gallerie, and museums stores like the de Young Museum Stores.

  • I volunteer at Oakland Museum of California , and take photographs everywhere I go. And I like fun stuff.
